The last time this amaryllis bloomed, three years ago, it was in my mother’s room. I’ve had it since 2014. Guess that doesn’t say much for my green thumb. The plant is a sweet reminder of Mother, who passed away a year and a half ago, but it’s not much to look at without its flowers. Last fall we bought some fertilizer and began feeding it regularly. A few days ago, these amazing blossoms emerged and it almost seemed that Mother had come to visit. She was an unpretentious person, always quietly supporting and serving others. It was only when you had a crisis that you realized how brilliant and essential she was to your existence. Similarly, the amaryllis plant is unassuming most of the year. But when it blooms, it’s a knock-out!
